The commune of Prunières is 1 000m high and has a permanent population of 275. It spreads over 1 320 hectares between the lake of Serre-Ponçon with 9 km of banks and the Aiguilles de Chabrières, towering over the ski resort of Réallon.

The village overlooking the lake is divided in several hamlets. Its inhabitants' livelihood depends essentially on agriculture, tourism or job opportunities in Gap, the department capital, only 20 km far.
Its great weather means many tourists come here to enjoy water activities and the mountains. The accommodation provided includes campsites, farm campsite, guest houses and seasonal rentals.


The Saint Michel Chapel is located on the commune, surrounded by water. It is the unofficial emblem of the department and is the most photographed site in the Hautes-Alpes.
